About
This story follows an explorer’s journey from the loud city streets of London to the harsh, storm-filled solitude of the Icelandic interior.
Combining the captivating story of exploration, endeavour & endurance with an otherworldly backdrop of visuals, this journey will create an emotional connection with the extreme whilst balancing the serenity. This is a story to be enjoyed from both Reykjavik and London.
Lucy Shepherd is an Explorer. From crossing Svalbard to the peaks of Denali, working alongside indigenous communities in the Amazon to Sámi of northern Norway, she has built a persona as
“The most hardcore member of the new generation of British adventurers.”
by The Times.
In Search of Winter follows Lucy as she navigates London to the 66°North store in preparation for her journey north. She’s no stranger to cold, uncomfortable journeys but an aura of anticipation is still obvious through her hurried, yet excited, approach.
The journey north traces her from Heathrow, via IcelandAir to Keflavik where she meets Siggi Bjarni, an Everest Summiteer, Explorer and our guide from Iceland. We’ve been working on a expedition into the interior for months, and with our cards close to our chest, we set off towards Reykjavik. It’s eerily quiet throughout town as our team collect their last minute necessities. The post-New Year blues have quietened the Laugavegur to pin-drop silence and within an instant, our team are back on road out of town.
During the drive Lucy and Siggi discuss our objectives for the next five days in the wild, assessing the correct approach considering the weather and finally, easily, submitting their plan to Safetravel.is. With only 5 hours of daylight, this journey seems endless as the roads disappears under snow pack, the light flickers behind the horizon and our teams excitement turns to trepidation.
“We’re here” explains Siggi as the vehicle comes to a halt. Surrounding the car is a flood of light from the full-beams and then an encapsulating wall of darkness from the moonless night sky. Visibility is meters with a cold chill embracing our team as they prepare their skis, boots and pulkas. Headlamps light their faces and brief glimpses of colour shine from their 66°North jackets.
For the next few days the team journey into the unknown. They face otherworldly storms with blizzarding winds, frigid-yet-humid sleet showers, frost-fog reducing the visibility to zero and seldom-seen moments of solace where the sun slightly breaches the southern skies to surround us with colour, beauty and awe. This is a journey designed for the challenge. It’s designed to test our team to their limits. If it were easy, it wouldn’t be hard. Yet throughout all their turmoil, our team have stayed cheerful. In the tent they laugh and joke as they melt snow for water. They share stories of journeys past and showcase the good moments in and amongst the endeavour. They create good moments, in bad weather. They know if they weren’t properly prepared, with the right training, experience & clothing, they couldn’t.
Upon return to Reykjavik our team retreat to their homes to thaw from their freeze. They have worked hard for the last five days. Their base-layers need airing, their bodies are sore and cold-injuries have started to take their grasp. A breath of calm overtakes our team. Relaxation, reflection and recovery.
The winds of a winter blizzard have taken Reykjavik into their grasp and our team must head out once more into the storm to meet for a final beer in town. They want to reflect together about their journey, not apart. Although this time their journey is a short taxi ride downtown, their clothing is jeans, not bibs - they still take the same jacket from their expedition In Search of Winter.
